If you are interested in foreign films, ethnic food, or foreign cultures, this is the DVD set (1-3) for you…based on the true story of a woman, an orphan. who struggles from poverty to become a doctor to the king and other members of the Korean monarchy. Indeed no other woman in the history of Korea had this distinction since normally no otherwoman but a wife or concubine could “touch” the king. How a woman could accomplish such a feat is due due her determination, her kindness, and scientific intelligence. As her rival describes her, even if you succeed in banishing her from the court, she will come back like coarse grass. Mesmerizing in every way: plot, scenery, characterization, historical detail, romance, cliff-hanging endings, herb science, costumes, sets. Too few films “in any language” provide meaningful role models for young women unconnected to violence. I LOVED this series and the principal female character. DAE JANG GEUM is not so much an episodic film as it is an experience. This mini-series became the most popular show in Hong Kong, Taiwan, and Korea. As one reviewer put it, once you see a few episodes, you are “addicted” to see this series to conclusion. Purchase the First Set for Christmas or Birthday Gifts and your friends and loved ones will not be disappointed. Five stars? Absolutely.

If you’re a fan of historical drama, costume drama or just drama in general, Dae Jan Geum is for you. This is some of the best televison I have ever seen, in any language. It ranks with some of the best feature films in its production values. The sets are so incredible and detailed that after the end of the series, it was converted into a theme park so that one could tour the realistic recreations of the Chosun royal palace kitchens.

While words like “mouth-watering” have been used to promote the show, it’s really not about cooking though a lot of cooking scenes do take place - many episodes of the series revolve around food and the preparation of it. Food is just a touchstone used to explore differing philosophies of life and how even the most mundane things can be used as tools in the hands of the good - and weapons in the hands of the evil. There’s plenty of intrigue, from the lowest servant rebelling against authority by making onions too salty to the hastening of a royal death by the serving of too-rich meals, but also an exploration of love and hate and what it means to live in such an artificial and repressed atmosphere as that of a royal palace.

It’s not all backstabbing and stir-frying though - there are minor characters who give welcome comic relief. A sweet romantic thread also runs through the story. There are even martial arts scenes and a short display of ssrieum, the Korean counterpart of sumo.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Dae Jang Geum vol. 1! Click Here

One thing not to be overlooked is the beautiful and sometimes haunting soundtrack. Western instruments playing music with a Korean flavor (a kind of reverse 12 Girls Band!) give the series the right ambience without alienating those who might not enjoy traditional Korean melodies. The soundtrack is worth buying on its own merits.

Because it’s a television series, each episode begins with a synopsis of earlier plot points and those tend to become tedious when watching the DVDs. There are many flashbacks also used to remind viewers of past incidents and that can also slow down the flow. Of course that’s what the fast-forward button is for.

Shop around. Amazon does not have the best price by a long shot. The entire series can be had in one huge boxed set (complete with additional trinkets referenced in the show).

This series is certainly addicting - expect to spend all of your free time for quite a while wallowing in the trials and triumphs of the great Jang Geum.

Other than a penchant for inspired madness and mad scientists, there is no overt relation between Disney’s “Phineas & Ferb” cartoon series and The Rocky Horror Picture Show. But you’ll see a backstage connection if you read the credits at the end of the five two-cartoon episodes on the this new DVD, “The Daze of Summer,” the second in the DVD series.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Phineas and Ferb, Vol. 2: The Daze of Summer! Click Here

Comprised of shows selected from both seasons, almost every cartoon in the collection features a very impressive cast of voice actors and others known for their on-camera work. But series creators Jeff “Swampy” Marsh and Dan Povenmire (who also voices the neurotic, insecure Doofensmirtz) must be big-time Rocky Horror fans because the voice of P & F’s clueless dad is none other than Richard O’Brien, one of the “Rocky Horror” creators as well as “Riff Raff” in “Rocky Horror” (and the Childcatcher in the London stage version of “Chitty Chitty Bang Bang”). Performing other voices in various shows are Rocky Horror alums Tim Curry and Barry Bostwick.

There are also many young actors from various Disney Channel TV series doing voices, most prominently “High School Musical’s” Ashley Tisdale as the Dr. Bellows/Mrs. Kravitz-like Candice, the tattletale sister who is never believed my mom (Caroline Rhea). She even gets a solo song, “Queen of Mars,” in a two-part episode. Other Disney Channel faves include Mitchel Musso, Alyson Stoner, Brenda Song and Brian Stepanek, as well as top Hollywood voice actors Corey Burton (narrating a film about platypuses) and Tom Kenny (best known as the voice of Spongebob).

Every episode of “Phineas & Ferb fulfills” the wishes of many pre-pubescent boys: it’s always summer vacation, the two brothers can create practically anything, visit almost anywhere and always outwit their sister. There is always a parallel story in which their pet platypus, Perry, saves the world from destruction. Both plots usually somehow tie together. I know it doesn’t make sense, but you have to see it to get it. The show’s creative team really pulls off a rich, gag-filled maze of story in every show, which makes them fun to re-watch.

The episodes are as follows:

JERK DE SOLEIL

Candice’s allergic reaction to parsnips gives her an “Audrey II” voice.

TOY TO THE WORLD

The boys create a new toy. There are references to Willy Wonka and searing, sad-but-true jabs at corporate “yessing.”

A HARD DAY’S KNIGHT

The family takes a London vacation.

I, BROBOT

Phineas and Ferb create an army of Phinadroids and Ferbots.

IT’S A MUD, MUD, MUD, MUD, MUD WORLD

The brothers try to cheer up their sister with a monster truck show.

THE BALLAD OF BADBEARD

On a camping trip, the boys sail for adventure while Candice hallucinates after touching moss and becomes part of a Perry mission. (Parents note: Candice has the grooviest 60’s-style psychedelic experience since Jackie Gleason in Skidoo.)

GREECE LIGHTNING

Candice is again compared to a hideous beast and Doofensmirtz unleashes an urbane robot monster named Norm.

LEAVE THE BUSTING TO US

Candice enlists a TV reality show crew to expose her brothers’ latest creation: a theme park in the backyard.

UNFAIR SCIENCE FAIR / SCIENCE FAIR REDUX

Two carttoons edited together, with Candice eventutally being crowned Queen of Mars. A fitting finale.

The DVD also includes a series of interactive games themed to a science fair.

If you are wondering what episodes are included in Phineas and Ferb: The Daze of Summer, Wonder no more. I own the dvd, and here are the episodes:

1. Jerk De Soleil

2. Toy To The World

3. A Hard Day’s Knight

4. I,Brobot

5. It’s A Mud,Mud,Mud,Mud World

6. The Ballad Of Badbeard

7. Greece Lightning

8. Leave The Busting To Us

9. Unfair Science Fair

10.Unfair Science Fair Redux

The last two listed episodes( Unfair Science Fair, and Unfair Science Fair Redux) are two episodes which I had never seen before. The episodes are about Phineas and Ferb helping Baljeet build a Portal to Mars, meanwhile Perry is fighting Dr. Doofensmirtz as usual, but it is interesting, because they show Dr. Doofensmirtz first (inator) invention!

Also Candace is trying to get a job with Jeremy.

Also included as a bonus feature on this dvd is THE GOOGOLPLEX MALL SCIENCE FAIR GAME/ACTIVITY. If you are a fan of Phineas and Ferb as I am, I highly suggest that you purchase this AWESOME dvd!!!

It’s rare that an artist can be both popular and one of the best at what he or she does. Alfred Hitchcock embodied both these elements. His films used suspenseful thrillers as a vehicle to try out inventive and often groundbreaking editing and camera techniques. While this collection from Warner Brothers doesn’t include all his best films, there are enough here to justify picking up this generous and beautifully remastered collection of some of Hitch’s best films.

Buy,Download, Or Stream The Alfred Hitchcock Signature Collection! Click Here

“Suspicion” is the oldest of the nine films included in this boxed set. Cary Grant plays Johnny Aysgarth a womanizing gambler who flirts with the bookish Lina McLaidlaw (Joan Fontaine in her Oscar winning role). After he woos and marries her, Lina begins to suspect that Johnny may be trying to kill her for her money. Although RKO forced Hitchcock to change the ending from the one he wanted (I’ll let you watch the short documentary on the film that’s included to find out what occurred) and the film was seriously compromised by studio interference, it’s still a worthwhile thriller that has Grant playing a cad at a point in his career when he was put into romantic leads. I’d be suspicious of anyone who said he loved me and still called me “monkey face”.

“Foreign Correspondent” was made by Hitchcock while he was on loan from David O. Selznick’s studio. Hitchcock relished the opportunity to work elsewhere as Selznick interfered too much with the making of the films he produced. Shot just as World War II was erupting in Europe dragging in other countries into the fray, the film stars Joel McCrea as reporter Johnny Jones (what’s with all these Johnny’s in Hitch’s films?) discovers a conspiracy of fascists threatening to take over Europe. McCrea gives a energetic performance and, although he wasn’t Hitch’s first choice (Henry Fonda was his first choice but the production couldn’t afford him), he more than lives up to the potential of the role.

“Mr. and Mrs. Smith” features Carole Lombard and Robert Montgomery in a screw-ball (!) comedy directed by the master of suspense. Hitch directed the film as a favor to Carole Lombard a very good friend at the time. While the script has some clever moments and Hitch’s direction has a number of nice set pieces, it’s one of Hitchcock’s lesser works. It’s still worth viewing.

“Strangers on a Train” is a flawed masterpiece from Hitch. Guy (Farley Granger) frustrated because his unfaithful wife won’t give him a divorce so he can remarry, chats with Bruno (the marvelous Robert Walker in one of his best roles) a passenger he meets on the train back to Washington D.C. After a drink Guy spills the beans about his wife and Bruno offers to swap murders. In essence, their crime will be perfect because their complete strangers and have no other connection other than the meeting on the train. Guy believes Bruno is joking and plays along. When Guy’s wife is brutally murdered (in a stunning sequence where we see the murder reflected in the woman’s glasses), Bruno expects Guy to reciprocate. Otherwise, he threatens to pin the murder on Guy. The stunning conclusion on the merry-go-round ranks as one of Hitch’s best. This edition includes both the final theatrical version and “preview” versions of the film which differ slightly.

“Dial M for Murder” caught Hitchcock recharging his batteries. Whenever he felt the need to creatively regenerate, he’d pick a subject that would interest him technically but that was already put together. It’s ironic, though, that he should pick another main character who is a tennis player. “Dial M” plays as a inverted version of “Strangers”. Based on Frederick Knott’s Broadway hit play, “Dial M for Murder” was originally shot in 3-D (and it’s a wonderful film to see in that format if for no other reason than to see what a great film director can do with the format with subtly and style) but only exhibited in that format in certain venues. Ray Milland (subbing for Cary Grant who had an argument with Hitchcock and withdrew from the film) plays a slick tennis player who devises the perfect murder. He blackmails an old college chum (the impressive Anthony Dawson) to fake a break in and murder his wealthy wife (Grace Kelly). It seems that Milland has discovered that she had an affair with an American mystery writer (Bob Cummings). The inspector (the droll John Williams) in the case recognizes that appearances can be deceiving when he investigates a murder.

Hitch believed “Stage Fright” to be one of his miscalculations because of a technical narrative trick he used to clue in viewers on the story. Richard Todd plays an actor being pursued for the murder of a lover’s (Marlene Dietrich) husband. Eve Gill (Jane Wyman) believes her male friend is innocent and goes undercover to try and catch the real killer. It’s a marvelous and underrated Hitchcock minor classic with a brilliant opening sequence and conclusion. The actors all give exceptional performances particularly Todd and Wyman. Playing with the artifice of the theater world, Hitch also plays with audience expectations.

“I Confess” had a troubled history during its production. Breen’s censorship office (which used to censor films even at the scripting stage) objected to Hitch’s story of a Priest (Montgomery Clift) who hears a murder confession and is torn about reporting it to the police. His vow prevents him from doing so but it also implicates him in the murder. Also featuring Anne Baxter and Karl Malden, “I Confess” isn’t entirely successful but its daring theme, performances and two stunning set pieces make it a worthwhile movie.

With “The Wrong Man” Hitch finally got his wish to work with all American icon Henry Fonda. Hitch elected to try the approach used by the Italian Neo-realism movement (best represented by DeSica’s “The Bicycle Thief”) in telling the true story of a musician named Manny who is identified as a robbery and murder suspect. This case of mistaken identity, the opposite of Hitch’s later experiment with “Psycho”, took an unusual tact with a more realistic performance style and less stylized look. It’s a minor Hitchcock classic with a strong performance by Vera Miles as Manny’s wife who ends up having a nervous break down due to what occurs.

All the movies look exceptional. The older movies have some analog inherent analog flaws due to the age of the films but, on the whole, have never looked better. “Strangers on a Train” has been digitally remastered for this edition and features a sharper image with less grain problems. The blacks, grays and whites are solid and less murky looking than on the previous edition. “Dial M for Murder” suffers from haloing due to the 3-D process used to shoot the movie but the colors are vibrant and rich. “North by Northwest” looks terrific. It was previously released on DVD and this is the same transfer using a cleaned up restored version of the film. The restored mono sound on “Dial M” and the many other films included here sounds crisp with good presence.

Making up for some of their oversights in the past, Warner has spent a lot of money to spiff up these classic movies. Every single movie has a short documentary on the making of the film featuring directors Richard Franklin (”Psycho 2″, “Roadgames”, “Flatland”) and Peter Bogdanovich (”Paper Moon”, “The Last Picture Show”, “What’s Up Doc?”) commenting on Hitch’s films. Franklin’s a good choice as he’s demonstrated tremendous skill in his overlooked suspense films. Bogdanovich who enjoyed a friendship with Hitch and interviewed the master for his book on Hitchcock has tremendous insight. He also does a killer Hitchcock imitation. Patricia Hitchcock O’Connell a fine character actress who appeared in two of the nine films included here, provides an insider’s perspective on the great director’s work and his overlooked collaborator his wife Alma Reville Hitchcock. There’s also a generous amount of behind-the-scenes photos included in many of the documentaries and clips from various films included in the set.

Both “North by Northwest” and “Strangers on a Train” come with commentary tracks. “North by Northwest” features the same commentary track by the late great Ernest Lehman as the previous edition. “Strangers on a Train” combines comments from Bogdanovich, “Psycho” screenwriter Jospeh Stefano and clips from Patricia Highsmith who wrote the novel the film is based on. It’s a pity that more clips of Hitch from Bogdanovich’s interviews and others over the years weren’t assembled to give us a running commentary from the master himself but both Bogdanovich and Stefano give great insight as they knew the man and/or worked with him and also have the distance of collaborators.

A great set from Warner Brothers, “The Alfred Hitchcock Signature Collection” should be an essential purchase for any fan of Hitch’s. There’s only one glaring omission from this set and that’s “Lifeboat” which Hitchcock directed for Fox. Unfortunately, Warner wasn’t able to secure the rights to include that for this DVD set. Oh, and I forgot to mention that every single title here is in the plastic Amray cases that Warner has recently begun releasing movies in so they’re more durable than the cardboard sleeves for the previous editions of “North by Northwest” and “Strangers on a Train”. My only complaint is with the box itself; it isn’t all that sturdy and could have more details about the films and the extras. I’d also like to have seen an additional disc featuring maybe Hitchcock’s films he made for the War Office during WWII as an extras here (similar to the episodes of “Alfred Hitchcock Presents” that Universal packaged with their boxed sets). Still, one can’t argue with the price as it works out to be roughly $10.00 for each movie. You’d pay nearly double that to buy them separately.

How can a film lover resist buying this amazing collection. Alfred Hitchcock now has another marvelous collection featuring some of his great and less-well-known films:

~~~~~~~~
*”STRANGERS ON A TRAIN” 2-Disc Special Edition: One of Hitch’s most brilliant films in which a tennis-pro, Guy (Farley Granger), meets an insane fan, Bruno (Robert Walker), on a train who tries to convince him that they should “criss-cross” murders: Guy’s free-spirited, pregnant wife whom he knows his baring someone else’s child for Bruno’s domineering father. The tension just builds from there.
I have to admit, I was ready to hate this movie. Having been a long-term fan of the Harry Potter books, a less-than-faithful adaptation could have spoiled it all for me. As it turns out, my fears were unfounded.
Okay, some viewers will nitpick over discrepencies in characters’ appearances, but all the IMPORTANT stuff is here. The relationships between the characters are spot-on. The film also successfully convinces us that the magical goings-on are part of the protagonists’ everyday lives, whilst at the same time instilling a sense of wonder in the audience. This difficult balance is one of the main reasons the books are so successful.
Some of the child actors are a little wooden at times, but generally the all-British cast is excellent. The rich characters of Rowling’s books have translated perfectly. Robbie Coltrane IS Hagrid. Emma Watson (Hermione) and Rupert Grint (Ron) have immense fun delivering most of the film’s best lines. Dan Radcliffe does well in the difficult task of communicating Harry’s thoughts, when the audience is unable to see them written down. Deserved mention, too, for Maggie Smith’s McGonagall, Alan Rickman’s Snape and Tom Felton’s nasty-yet-vulnerable Draco Malfoy.
The quality of the production is excellent. The sets and costumes are fabulous, and the attention to detail is breathtaking. The effects are superb, obvious highlights being Harry’s invisibility cloak, and the Quidditch match (an adrenaline-pumping spectacle right up there with anything Star Wars has to offer).
In between the showpieces, director Chris Columbus remembers to let his audience take a breather with quieter moments. Harry staring out of his bedroom window, and he and Ron opening their presents on Christmas morning, are endearingly down-to-earth. And the scenes of Harry in front of the Mirror of Erised brought a tear to my eye (If you’ve read the book, you’ll know why).
That’s not to say the movie is without its faults. In an attempt to please purists, ALL the subplots have been included (though pared down a great deal), when omitting a few entirely may have helped the pacing of the film. The opening half-hour may be difficult to grasp for those who are unfamiliar with the book. A few of the magical artefacts seem rather more mechanical than mystical.
But these are all small niggles, really. The bottom line is that 152 minutes fly by as if it were half an hour. The only wish you have is that it were longer, and there can be no better sign of a good film than that.
Like the director, Chris Columbus, I believe that since the book was so well done, the movie shouldn’t change anything significant. I needn’t go on about the actors, scenery, music, etc. It’s all very well done and extremely entertaining.
The movie itself gets 5 stars from me.
My review subtracts a star for the second disk which I found extremely frustrating. There is some very nice material included but it’s so difficult to find while wading through the inconsequential filler material that it almost isn’t worth it.
BTW - if you have a search function on your DVD player (on my remote, it is accessed through the ‘Display’ button) the deleted scene access screen is #77
Simply put, I bought this, brought it home, and spent the wee hours of the night smiling on the couch as the one and only Buckethead filled my living room with his unique brand of guitar-shred-funk-fusion-dementia. This dvd is a trip, from the wacked out menus to the oodles of content that cover his whole career so far…videos (Praxis!), discography (you think you have it all, but I assure you, you don’t), and a bonus dvd with 2 live shows (it doesn’t hurt that I can see myself in the Boston one, laughing like a goon as he hands out toys). There’s just tons of bucketgoodies hiding in here. This dude is just the whole package-Eddie Van Halen and Eddie Hazel all in one, mixed with Leatherface and The Shape. So rad. This dvd definitely had a lot of time and creativity put into it, so to anyone who doesn’t enjoy this for the perfect representation of the Bucketman that it is, you simply be missin’ the point. Might I suggest you stick to your Dream Theater/Satriani/G3 dvd’s, you 5.1 Surround sound obsessed prog-metal nerds…you don’t like chickens, get out the coop!
If you bought this DVD, well, you must have knew what to expect. BH is one strange mofo, and this DVD fits the bill. Your not getting a Oscar nominee DVD folks, its a collection of home videos, raw concert footage, and some interesting music. Its well produced considering what you see and hear. The extras are funny to us BH fans, yet the format to see everything on the DVD is weird, many extras you have to seek to get to. Maybe that’s what BH wanted, his fan-base is smart. If you like BH or play an instrument, doesn’t have to be guitar, get this DVD. If you expected a Star Wars production , don’t. BH loves old Giant Robot, and this DVD is put together like an old Japanese Sci Fi show. Even has sub-titles at moments with foreign footage.
In the end, this is quite possibly the first DVD I ever saw, enjoyed, and when over, shook my head wondering what the hell I just saw
I SHOT JESSE JAMES ****1/2 1949. Written and directed by Samuel Fuller. Robert Ford shoots Jesse James in the back in order to get the reward and start a new life but his girl-friend doesn’t want him anymore after Jesse’s murder so Robert heads to Colorado to make a fortune. Superb psychological western with a first-class performance of John Ireland as Robert Ford. Note the scene of the theatre when Robert Ford is trying, as an actor playing his own character, to recreate Jesse James’s murder before the audience: simply a little jewel. Highly recommended.
THE BARON OF ARIZONA ***1/2 1950. Written and directed by Samuel Fuller. An office clerk imagines an unbelievable swindle, patiently forging proofs that his wife is the legal owner of Arizona. Vincent Price is imperial as a womanizer, a monk, a gypsy and finally as the Baron of Arizona. The most impressive scene of the film is the scene of the lynching which already foreshadows the future masterpieces of Samuel Fuller. Recommended.
THE STEEL HELMET ***** 1951. Written, produced and directed by Samuel Fuller. THE STEEL HELMET was the first American movie about the Korea war which started just six months before its theatrical release. Eight soldiers, trapped in a Buddhist temple, fight the communist North Korean army. Be prepared for eighty-five minutes of non-stop tension. Samuel Fuller reveals here his taste for bizarre scenes which leave you wondering why this director isn’t more appreciated. Masterpiece.
All in all, an indispensable box set for every movie lover. Don’t be the last one to rediscover the most underrated American film director. Bring Sam Fuller to where he should already be. In your library.
The real deal on this is “The Steel Helmet”! A movie made at the start of the Korean war that was 50 years ahead of it’s time. Despite some dated terms and perceptions, it provides a tense look at a tense time. A must have to any serious war movie or any movie collector. As for the other two, well Vincent Price gives a great perfomance in “The Baron of Arizona” even if the movie plays lose and fast with the history behind it. I say get the popcorn, turn out the lights and have a great family night watching one great, one good, and one “typical oater” for a good price….
Welcome to the wonderfully wacky world of the Coen brothers. Joel and Ethan Coen are two of the most brilliant filmmakers in America today. Every film they turn out is a cinematic gem, and “Barton Fink” is no exception.
The film centers around a slightly pompous, idealistic, left wing playwright, Barton Fink (John Turturro), who in 1941, after becoming the toast of Broadway as the pretentious voice of the common man, goes west to Hollywood at the invitation of a major studio in order to try his hand at writing screenplays.
There, he meets studio head, Jack Lipnick (Michael Lerner), and his yes man and whipping boy, Lou Breeze (Jon Polito). Asked to write a screenplay for a Wallace Beery vehicle about wrestling, a subject about which the bookish Fink knows nothing about, causes Fink to go into a professional tailspin.
Ensconced in a decaying old hotel, seemingly run by its slightly creepy and unctuous bell hop, Chet (Steve Buscemi), who bizarrely appears on the scene out of a trapdoor behind the hotel’s front desk, Fink begins his ordeal . The elevator is run by a cadaverous, pock marked, elderly man. The corridors of the hotel seem endless. The wallpaper in Fink’s room is peeling away from the wall, leaving a viscous, damp ooze in its wake. His bed creaks and groans with a life of its own. It is also hot, oppressively hot.
No residents of the hotel are apparent, except for the appearance of shoes outside the doors in expectation of the free shoe shine the hotel offers its denizens and for the noise made by his neighbors. Finks meets one of his neighbors, the portly Charlie Meadows (John Goodman), a gregarious Everyman, possessed of an abundance of bonhomie. A self-styled insurance salesman, Charlie cajoles Fink out of his shell, befriending him in the process. Little does Fink know that beneath Charlie’s congenial exterior lies a horrific secret that will spillover onto him in the not so distant future.
At a luncheon with studio under boss, Ben Geisler (Tony Shalhoub), Fink meets a famous writer that he reveres, W. P. Mayhew (John Mahoney), a southern sot so steeped in drink that his companion/secretary, Audrey Taylor (Judy Davis), has to do his writing for him. Fink falls for Audrey but finds his overtures rebuffed. Still, she is willing to try and help him overcome his profound writer’s block. In a classic Coen twist, it is this single act of kindness that acts as the catalyst for the nightmare that makes Fink’s life become a living hell on earth. He goes from living a life of self-imposed isolation and angst to one that appears to have been created by a Hollywood hack, filled as it is with the most incredible situations, a real studio head’s dream.
John Turturro is terrific as the introverted, tightly wound, pretentious, and neurotic Fink, who in Hollywood, away from the womb of the Great White Way, is like a lamb led to the slaughter. With his sculpted afro, horn rimmed glasses, nerdy clothes, Fink is the stereotypic Hollywood notion of the commie writer. John Turturro makes the role his with a purposeful intensity.
John Goodman is sensational as the garrulous Charlie Meadow, the epitome of the working class man about whom Fink likes to write. Unfortunately, all is not as it seems, as Charlie has a dark side to him, a very dark side. John Mahoney is excellent as the Faulknerian-like writer, and Judy Davis outdoes herself, as the self-sacrificing Audrey Taylor.
Michael Lerner will razzle-dazzle the viewer with his over the top portrayal of a fast talking studio head who is willing to pay big bucks for the cache of having a top Broadway playwright turn out screenplay swill for the masses. Jon Polito is very good as the Uriah Heepish, quintessential yes man he portrays. Tony Shalhoub is excellent in his role, underscoring the absurdity of the old Hollywood studio system.
Steve Buscemi, looking surprisingly small in his bell hop uniform, resembles an organ grinder’s monkey, at times. The viewer may also expect him to bellow, “Call for Phillip Morris”, as in the old cigarette campaign, though he speaks in a controlled, respectful monotone, at all times. Still, his very presence adds a slightly sinister quality to the film, though he does nothing remotely sinister, other than the way he makes his screen appearance. His entrance onto the screen in this fashion foreshadows what is to come.
This film is not for everyone, as it does not have a neatly wrapped ending. Instead, it goes beyond the standard expected ending into an absurdist foray. Still, those who love films by the Coen Brothers will not be disappointed by this satiric look at Hollywood. It is little wonder that this film became the darling of the Cannes Film Festival.
For a long time, the absurdist masterpiece Barton Fink was only available in a dingy VHS release. It was better than nothing, but this film deserved better. Thankfully, it’s here - in all its stupefying glory.
I won’t recount the story. Plenty of other reviews do that. Not long ago I was tempted to interpret it. That still seems a valid course, as there is a genuine sense that, beneath its comic, surreal surface, Barton Fink is trying to tell us something urgent and important. Perhaps, but the primal forces in a writer’s mind as s/he shapes a great story do that, anyway - often without the writer’s specific knowledge.
Rather than a simple allegory, Barton Fink is a collection of surfaces, styles, textures, and mannerisms. That they seem to add up to more than the sum of their parts is the great trick, akin to the way a painter can suggest the dappled depths of a forest with a few deft pats of a fan brush. Which isn’t to say the film is shallow. No; there is a lot going on here. But to suggest that this film has a specific meaning is also to suggest it has an answer. Only mediocre films (by the likes of, say, Stanley Kramer or Oliver Stone) provide answers in a attempt to make themselves more important. The Coens (writer Ethan, director Joel), like most of us, haven’t a clue about the Mysteries of Life. So they don’t try to “…tell us something about all of us, something beautiful…” as Fink himself professes. Instead, they enjoy “…making things up…”, like the other writer in the film, the Faulkneresque W.P. Mayhew (played to perfection by John Mahoney).
Somewhere in here, though, the sleight-of-hand, the postmodern flourishes (wherein genres clash and surfaces spill over one another in unexpected ways), cracks appear. Through them we glimpse something else…something truly terrifying.
Barton Fink’s resonances with the Holocaust are well-known (the sinister and Fascistic German and Italian cops, the Jewish Fink, the burning hallway, the story’s year - 1941, the nice guy next door - also with a German name - who turns out to be a madman; on and on). These touches cannot be accidental. Yet, the Coens seem to have deliberately avoided any obvious throughline, any markers which would provide for a clear interpretation.
Perhaps this is the point - that there is no way to make sense of the madness. Barton Fink, the character, is a writer who tries to celebrate the “common man” - to write about “real life”. Yet, real life is incomprehensible to him. Nice Guy Charlie Meadows (the excellent John Goodman) is a twisted murderer. His idol is a raving drunk. His muse is a purveyor of formula hackery. The authorities are openly anti-semitic. And his bosses - Lipnick (Michael Lerner) and Geisler (Tony Shalhoub) - are utterly indifferent to his craft. The events that unfold around him are too horrifying and strange to make sense of. Simply put, they cannot be explained by any rational interpretation. Which, if this film is really a parable of the Holocaust, is as it should be, since there is no rationale in genocide.
When it comes to “making things up”, no one does it better than the Coens. Their skill in marshalling symbols is sublime: Mayhew’s latest book is called “Nebuchadnezzar”; Lipnick, like king Nebuchadnezzar, has a dream he wants Fink to interpret (the wrestling film he’s writing for Wallace Beery). At a critical point in the film, a dazed, sleepless Fink opens the Gideon bible to the page where Nebuchadnezzar threatens to reduce the Chaldeans’ tents to a dung-heap if someone cannot interpret his dream. He flips to Genesis, and there, on the page, is the opening of his screenplay - the only part of it he’s been able to write. It’s a brilliant sequence, that truly adds up. Lipnick is Nebuchadnezzar; Fink is trying to be Daniel. There is (literally) Hell to pay if he cannot do the job.
Beyond a few moments like these, though, trying to impose a specific meaning on Barton Fink is folly - like trying to impose a specific meaning on any of Luis Bunuel’s better films. There is something about it that, like Lynch’s best work, goes right past the rational self and nestles more deeply in the unconscious. I get something from every viewing of this film, and part of its beauty is that I cannot articulate exactly what that is.
This DVD is nicely produced, with Roger Deakins’ glowing cinematography looking better than ever, and Dolby Surround sound track well reproduced. A 5.1 re-mix would have been welcome, as would a serious commentary track, should the Coens ever be able to bring themselves around to doing one that doesn’t poke fun of commentary tracks.
John Turturro is excellent as the title character. Judy Davis acquits herself nicely as Mayhew’s secretary/lover/ghost-writer.
This is one of those films that’s worth really thinking about, and watching again and again. Don’t expect answers; expect an experience - and a powerful one at that.
SG-1 is crazy good, and Season 2 was arguably the best season so far. As with many TV adaptations, the sophomore year is when a series tends to truly expand its horizons from the original, and this is certainly true with Stargate SG-1. Season Two lays the groundwork for many of the key storylines of the series, so it is a must for any viewer. I’ve been awaiting this since the first box set, especially with the Region 2 DVD’s being up to Season Four.
I cannot stress to anyone enough who has not watched the TV series that it is superb. If you would have asked me over a year ago about SG-1, I would have dismissed it easily as a cheesy Made-In-Canada (don’t fret, I’m Canadian) Sci-Fi series. True, a lot of that would have been from my bias from the movie, and that it starred Patty and Selma’s hero MacGyver ;-), but after only seeing a few shows, I became quickly hooked. I was blown away by the unbelievable chemistry of the cast, the great story writing, and the quality of the special effects. We truly need more advocates for the series, as good TV is often hard to find. I’m about to preorder my copy now…
Although it has taken a long time for them to be released, these DVD’s have definitely been worth the wait. Stargate SG-1 is one of the best sci-fi shows that has been around in years, taking an original and interesting premise (originally introduced in the Stargate movie, although expanded and changed a little) and weaving it into a detailed and complex storyline that continues to entertain.
The second season sees Stargate SG-1 really come into it’s own, finding it’s feet after a mostly hit-and-miss first year. Among other things, we see the introduction of some new characters (both good and bad) this season, which adds a whole new dimension to the show and sets up some brilliant story arcs. The mythology behind the Stargate is explored a little deeper as well, allowing for some interesting discoveries and character development.
Featuring such memorable episodes as The Serpent’s Lair, A Matter Of Time, Holiday, 1969 and The Fifth Race, this is a collection that I will be re-watching and enjoying for a long time to come.
I don’t care if the film is historically inaccurate. Errol Flynn may not have been an ideal figure in real life but the movies he was in, well, I was raised with the 30’s and 40’s films and his films always gave me a hero to look up to and how things should have been done. They inspired me and taught me right from wrong and how to treat people fairly. Along with my Dad’s guidelines, I was better for it. That’s all I care about, not whether it was historically accurate. Mr. Flynn, even in real life, was a chip off the old block. I love this film. I grew up with it and it still gets an emotional rise out of me when I view it. Its what Custer should have been in my opinion and as a young boy watching this for the first time, influenced me for the rest of my life. Errol Flynn was my hero after I saw this and his WWII Burma movie. Its a shame he’s gotten a bad shake from the critics whether now or in the past.
After “The Adventures of Robin Hood,” this is Errol Flynn’s best movie. As noted elsewhere, it’s worthless as history. But the casting of Flynn as Custer has a resonance that burns up the screen, and behind the romanticism one glimpses a portrait of an unhappy, self-destructive man who is a hero in spite of himself. Flynn’s farewell scene with Olivia de Havilland is almost unbearably moving, as if both sensed the real-life parallel and the future awaiting them both. This is a rousing, action-packed movie with just about everything: adventure, comedy and romance… but it’s one of the rare ones that also gets under your skin.
Guy Ritchie’s “RocknRolla” is an expertly crafted crime caper, leading its characters through a labyrinthine plot, enticing the audience with clever writing, a strong cast, and brilliantly structured scenes of amazing style and precision. It earns the rare distinction of being successfully violent and funny at the same time, and yet it isn’t cheap or juvenile; it achieves a higher level of boorishness, one that doesn’t leave us feeling ashamed so much as it forces us to stare in helpless fascination. It tells a story that inventively entangles the characters–and us–in a vast web of corruption, deceit, and greed, and that’s only within the first fifteen minutes. With such creative, fast-paced storytelling at work, I was happy to just sit back, relax, and let the story happen to me. Some may criticize “RocknRolla” for being hard to follow, and indeed, an awful lot happens in a relatively short period of time. But if you watch and listen closely, you’ll soon realize that it’s guiding you along.
What exactly is a RocknRolla? According to the film’s narrator, a gangster named Archie (Mark Strong), to be a RocknRolla is, “not about drugs, drums, and hospital drips. We all like a bit of the good life–some the money, some the drugs, others the sex game, the glamour, or the fame.” But a RocknRolla is different. Why? “Because a real RocknRolla wants the lot.” It could be said, then, that Lenny Cole (Tom Wilkinson), Archie’s boss and the notoriously powerful head of London’s criminal underworld, is a RocknRolla. He has complete control over the city’s booming real estate market. One day, a pair of gangsters–One Two (Gerard Butler) and Mumbles (Idris Elba)–ask Lenny to finance a piece of property they want to develop. Lenny agrees to loan them a sizeable sum. What they don’t know is that he doesn’t intend on giving them the permits they’re going to need; by going back on the deal, he can claim the property for himself and sell it for millions more. Unfortunately, this means that One Two and Mumbles will be millions of pounds in debt.
Here enters Stella (Thandie Newton), a cigarette-smoking, double-crossing temptress who, out of convenience, married a gay lawyer. She’s a super-crafty accountant for a Russian mobster named Uri (Karel Roden), who, as it turns out, is making his own real estate deals with Lenny. When Uri asks Stella to secure 7,000,000 euros for a business transaction, she decides to play her own little game: She’ll hire someone to intercept the unprotected money, then she’ll pay the interceptor 2,000,000 euros and keep the remaining 5,000,000 for herself. Lo and behold, along comes One Two, desperately in need of cash to pay off his debt.
Buy,Download, Or Stream RocknRolla! Click Here
And this is when things really get interesting. Around the same time Stella and One Two come to an understanding, Uri decides to lend his most prized possession, a painting, to Lenny. Uri says that the painting has always brought him good luck, and as a gesture of goodwill, he wants to temporarily share that luck with Lenny. What’s interesting about this subplot is that we never actually see the painting, so we can only assume what its actual value is. Be that as it may, the painting is very valuable to Uri, which poses a real problem for Lenny when it ends up getting stolen. Not wanting to appear foolish, and hoping to keep hold of his deal with Uri, Lenny urgently orders his men to keep watch over the criminal underworld of London. This includes One Two’s gang, the Wild Bunch. It also includes Lenny’s stepson, Johnny Quid (Toby Kebbel), a rebellious, self-destructive junkie rock star who, for reasons known only to him, repeatedly fakes his own death.
As Lenny’s desperation grows, he threatens to shut down a nightclub owned by Roman (Chris “Ludacris” Bridges) and Mickey (Jeremy Piven), two Americans who frequently showcased Johnny’s band. Roman and Mickey then seek out a man named Cookie (Matt King), a junkie himself before Johnny helped him overcome his addiction (or so he claims). Because of this, Cookie refuses to tell them where Johnny is hiding.
As the film’s writer, Ritchie not only proves that he can give his characters witty, irreverent dialogue, he also proves that he can develop them in ways appropriate to the story. One example is Handsome Bob (Tom Hardy), who comes out of the closet as he sits in the car with his best friend, One Two. In a lesser film, Handsome Bob would be a run-of-the-mill gay stereotype, serving no real purpose other than being everyone’s punch line. Here, he’s a functional, contributing character, and he makes it clear that he doesn’t want to do anything funny with One Two–he just wants to dance with him. Another example is a pair of sadomasochistic Russian bodyguards, who compare scars with the same casual manner of boys comparing baseball cards. They’re virtually indestructible, as One Two discovers when he tries to rob them of their money (another one of Stella’s jobs). What could have been unnecessary distractions are instead entertaining side characters.
As the film’s director, Ritchie takes the time to consider every detail, from camera angles to lighting to speed, all of which add to the quirkiness of the characters. Johnny, for example, is usually filmed in slow motion while engulfed in the murkiness of his drug den. There’s also a wonderful shot in a museum, in which Stella begins walking away from One Two; she starts at a normal pace, but in a moment of adrenaline, the film speeds up, and she zooms out of the shot. How perfect for a character that quickly switches allegiances whenever money is at stake. “RocknRolla” is an absolutely masterful film, wonderfully acted, carefully plotted, and cleverly structured.
Guy Richie has turned out the gem of his career with RockNrolla. Perfect cast (Wilkenson should get an award for this one) incredible sound track, and a wild and wicked plot. Unlike some of his others, this one makes it a bit easier to understand the dialects. It was the delight of my movie going month in October when it came out here in the U.S.
From reading some of the reviews that pan this movie, it is obvious that they are not familiar with Guy Richie’s films, his style and his offbeat humor. It is sort of like licorice; Some people love it some people hate it. But for those of us who have the right mindset for Richie’s style of film, this it the best one to come along in a long time.
Gerard Butler’s turn in this is hysterically funny and is such a great switch from his role in 300. No type casting trap for Gerry. This guy can play the heck out of any role imaginable. But if the Wild Bunch shows up again in the next Richie film, I hope Gerry is included.
